Wilma Morton Garner

Wilma Morton Garner, 76, of Durham, North Carolina, passed away peacefully at her son’s home on Thursday, December 25, 2025. She was born on June 26, 1949, to the late William and Lucy Morton.

In addition to her parents, she is also preceded in death by her sisters, Betty Brown, Lucy O’Neal and JoAnn Rozier.

A lifelong resident of the Durham area, Wilma built a life rooted in hard work, family, and a deep appreciation for enjoying life on her terms. 

Mrs. Garner dedicated many years of service to IBM Manufacturing in Durham, North Carolina, as well as to the Durham Public School System, working in Transportation before her retirement. Her strong work ethic and commitment were evident in everything she did.

Wilma had a passion for gardening and could often be found tending to her plants. She loved Thrift shopping, gambling, and embracing life fully­­-always with confidence and humor. Those who knew her would say she was “always right,” a trait she carried with charm and certainty.

She found peace and happiness fishing along the Outer Banks of North Carolina and fondly remembered visiting White Lake during her younger years. These places held special meaning and reflected her love for relaxation, nature, and making memories.

Mrs. Garner will be remembered for her strong spirit, love of life, and unwavering confidence. She leaves behind cherished memories in the hearts of all who knew and loved her.

Mrs. Garner is survived by her son, Dennis Toney (Jeanette); daughter, Karen Garner; brothers, Sam Morton (Carolyn) and Carlyle Morton; sisters, Mary Roberts (Danny) and Linda Smith; grandsons, Andrew Toney (Caitlin) and Jordan Toney (Logan); great-grandsons, Hudson Toney and Kixx Toney; step-grandchildren, Madison Harmon, Morgan Harmon, and Nicholas Harmon; along with many nieces and nephews.

Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 P.M. on Wednesday, December 31, 2025, at Hudson Funeral Home, 211 S. Miami Blvd., Durham, NC 27703. Interment will follow at Oak Grove Memorial Gardens in Durham, NC. Reverend Gene Holder will officiate.

The family will receive friends prior to the service starting at 12:30 P.M.
