Vernon Ray Parnell, Sr.

DURHAM- Mr. Vernon Ray Parnell, Sr., 89, passed away Friday, October 25, 2019 at Croasdaile Village.
Mr. Parnell was born August 11, 1930 in Charlotte, NC to the late William and Vivian Teague Parnell. He owned and operated Parnell Printers. Mr. Parnell was a member of Bethesda Baptist Church. He was a former choir member and taught youth Sunday School Class. Mr. Parnell was a Deacon and Greeter and a member of the Primetimers. He was an avid Duke fan, football coach for the youth leagues and he loved to read. Mr. Parnell proudly served his country in the United States National Guard.
Mr. Parnell is preceded in death by his first wife, Jean Shutt Parnell, second wife, Velma Sykes Parnell; and a sister, Doris Parnell.
Mr. Parnell is survived by his sons, Vernon Ray Parnell, Jr. (Debbie) of Durham, Michael Parnell (Janice) of Stovall, Mark Parnell (Treva) of Kosciusko, MS; daughters, Judy Roach (Rodger) of Burlington, Cynthia Johnson (Wayne) of Durham; step-daughter, Nancy Lewis (Charlie) of Durham; step-son, Steven Jarrell (Courtney) of Concord; stepson-in-law, Allen Gayle (Pamela); sister, Virginia Reid of Anderson, SC; brother, Robert Parnell (May) of Haw River; sisters in law, Mamie Alice Burton, Mary Frances Parry and Sarah Shutt; grandchildren, Lauren and husband Matt, Tyler and wife Laura, Seana and husband Micah, Rachel and husband Nick, Brandon and wife Amanda, Tiffany and husband Curtis, Shana and husband Mike, Kayla and husband Michael, Jessica and husband Jacobo, Nathan and wife Emily, Rebekah and husband Josh, Courtney, Caleb and wife Hannah, and Jennifer; 25 Great Grandchildren, 6 Step Grandchildren and numerous Step Great Grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Brandon Parnell, Caleb Parnell, Nathan Parnell, Wayne Johnson, Charlie Lewis, CL Ashley, Chris Christy and Jock Smith.
A visitation will be held Sunday, October 27, 2019 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Hudson Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held 1:00 p.m. Monday, October 28, 2019 at Bethesda Baptist Church. Officiating will be Rev. Jonathan Barbee, Rev. Mark Parnell, Rev. Rodger Roach and Rev. Tyler Roach. Burial will follow at Woodlawn Memorial Park.
