Thomas Sidney “Tommy” Herndon, 80, of Timberlake, passed away May 7, 2026, at Veterans Administration Medical Center. He was born in Chatham County on October 12, 1945, to the late William Robert and Myrtle Burgess Herndon.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Herndon was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Kandi Marie Herndon; brothers, W.R. Herndon, John Herndon, George Herndon, and Paul Herndon; sisters Grace Combs, Violet Colough, Mary Ward, and Annie Ruth.
Mr. Herndon is survived by his wife of 54 years Dianne Yarborough Herndon; sons, Jody Herndon and wife Theresa of Timberlake, Dwayne Keith Herndon of Butner; daughter, Tonya Herndon Crabtree and husband Jimmy of Franklinton; brother, Charles Herndon; sister, Marie McCorkle and husband Pete; grandchildren, Dwayne Herndon II (Emily), Noelle Herndon (Johnny), Eli Herndon, Kaitlyn Steele (Daniel), Andrew Crabtree (Destiny), Matthew Crabtree (Erin), Dylan Herndon (Lena) and Casen Herndon; great grandchildren, Logan, Maci, Ava, P.J., Aria, Sage, Oakland, Chandler and River; also, several nieces and nephews.
Tommy proudly served his country in the United States Army during the Vietnam era. A man of strong Christian faith, he was a dedicated member of Cornerstone Church of God. Tommy was a devoted husband, father, brother, uncle, and grandfather who cherished time with his family. He enjoyed fishing and taking trips to the beach. An avid Carolina fan, and as a hobby, he also took great pleasure in collecting die-cast model cars.
A visitation will be held on Tuesday, May 12, 2026, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Hudson Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, May 13, 2026, at 11 a.m. Officiating will be Pastor Stuart Aycock.
Burial with military honors will follow at Woodlawn Memorial Park in Durham.
Flowers are acceptable.
