Steven Lawrence Crain, Sr.

Steven L. Crain, Sr., 66, of Durham, North Carolina passed away surrounded by his family in the early morning hours of Thursday, June 12, 2025. He was born May 18th, 1959, in Durham, NC to the late Clyde and Gloria Crain.

In addition to his parents, he is also preceded in death by his ex-wife but beloved friend, Barbara Crain; son, Steven L. Crain Jr.; infant twin daughters, Brenda and Erika Crain and his brother, Norwood ‘Scott’ Crain.

Mr. Crain, along with his brothers, owned and operated Crain Brothers Painting serving RDU and the surrounding area for over 30 years. He took great pride in his work and was one of the best painters in the state.

In his spare time Steve enjoyed catching catfish, watching NASCAR or watching old Westerns. He also liked to read, especially science fiction or mystery novels. Most of all, he loved being around his grandchildren.

Steve was a wonderful man, always willing to help anyone in need whether a family member or stranger. His protective and strong nature always made his family feel secure and loved. He was a humble and forgiving man, who understood life is too short and always be kind to others.

Mr. Crain is survived by his sons, Joshua Crain, Jamie Schunke (Dallas) and Anthony Jones (Samantha); daughters, Jessica Crain Crutchfield-Collins (Joshua) and Abbie Crain Jackson; brothers, Timothy Crain (Dana) and Michael Crain (Dawn); sisters, Kimberly Crain Knight (Dan) and Elizabeth Crain Kirkland (Tommy); grandchildren, Austin Burchette, Maddison Crutchfield, Henry Schunke, Samuel Schunke, Michael Schunke, Benjamin Schunke, Shane Jones, Bentley Jones and Shaea Jones; his beloved dog, Bella and other loving family members and friends.

A Funeral Service will be held at 2:00 P.M. on Tuesday, June 17, 2025 at Hudson Funeral Home, 211 S. Miami Blvd., Durham, NC 27703. Interment will follow at Woodlawn Memorial Park in Durham, NC. Pastor Jeff Upright will officiate.

The family will receive friends prior to the service starting at 1:00 P.M.

Serving as Pallbearers will be Joshua Crain, Austin Burchette, Joshua Crutchfield, Troy Crain, Richard Kelly, Jeremy Kelly, Jeff Crain and Abbie Crain Jackson.

Flowers are acceptable.
