Shirley Sutton Harris

Shirley Ann Sutton Harris, 91, of Durham, passed away Saturday, October 24, 2026, at Duke Regional Hospital. She was born on February 10, 1935, in Pitt County, NC, the late Garfield and Lady Marie Allen Sutton.

In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband of 44 years, Everett “Carl” Harris, Jr.; her daughter, Diane Harris; daughter-in-law Tammie Fisher Harris; brothers-in-law, John Gray and Julian Bowman; and 2 brothers.

She is survived by her son, Everett Carl “Buddy” Harris, III; grandchildren, Jeremy Harris and wife Stacy of Durham, Jamie Johnson and husband Brad of Mebane; great grandchildren, Grayden Harris, Gavin Harris, Elijah Johnson, Wyatt Johnson, Remington “Remi” Johnson, and Magnolia “Maggie” Johnson; sisters-in-law, Faye Gray and Kaye Bowman.

Shirley became a homemaker after working at Davis Bakery in Durham during her early years. She dearly loved her family and especially enjoyed caring for her grandchildren, Jeremy and Jamie, and nephew John Gray, Jr. when they were young. Shirley enjoyed gardening, working on puzzles, making jewelry, and taking occasional trips to the beach.

As per Shirley’s wishes, no funeral services are planned.

Memorial donations in Shirley’s memory can be made to Duke Hospice or American Heart Association.
