Dr. Scott Tracy Josephs passed away at Cape Cod Hospital, near his home in Mashpee, MA, on Monday, the 28th of July, 2025. He had turned 63 two weeks prior.
Scott was born in Brooklyn, NYC, on July 14th, 1962. He was the youngest of the four children of Dr. Herbert Thomas (Tom) and Judith (Judy) Josephs. He received his BA at Tufts University, attended medical school at the University of Pennsylvania, and completed his residency in internal medicine at Beth Israel Hospital in Boston. It was at Beth Israel where he met Lisa Marie Kazanjian, who would become his wife of thirty-three years. After completing his residency, he entered private practice outside of Boston. He and Lisa welcomed a daughter, Anya, in 1994, and a son, Aaron, in 1996. The family then moved to Chapel Hill, North Carolina, where Scott worked at Cigna Healthcare, retiring as Chief Medical Officer in November of 2024.
In his career as a physician and as a medical officer at Cigna, Scott tirelessly pursued the principles of health equity and quality care that he believed in so deeply. His profound knowledge of medicine was matched only by the generosity, kindness, and dedication with which he treated his patients and all those who turned to him for medical wisdom. His life was illuminated by his passion for the study of history and science, his enjoyment of chess, tennis, and volunteering, his appreciation for the arts, and his love of learning. Above all, he took his greatest joy in his family: inventing elaborate stories for his children when they were small, building a loving home and traveling the world with his wife, honoring the memories of his own parents, and infinitely believing in those he loved.
He was predeceased by his father, Tom, his mother, Judy, and his sister, Sheri. He leaves behind his wife, Lisa, his daughter, Anya, and his son, Aaron; his sister Laurie (Josh Brain), his brother Jason (Barbara Tobias), his stepmother Linda, and their families; and a large community of friends, extended family, and family by choice. He also leaves a legacy of selfless care for others, true and unrelenting goodness, and love that will always live on.
In lieu of flowers, donations to Judea Reform Congregation, where he was a member for 25 years, or to Iglesia Emanuel Food Pantry of Durham, where he volunteered, are appreciated.
