A funeral service will be held at 2:00 PM on Thursday, November 21, 2024 at the Hudson Funeral Home, with the burial to follow at Woodlawn Memorial Park in Durham. The family will receive friends from 1:00 – 2:00 PM, prior to the service at the funeral home.
Mrs. Hill was born in Lexington, NC to her mother, Blanche Irene Swing Lord and her father, Charlie Lee Lord.
Sarah was truly a most loving and generous person. She and her late husband, Jesse Howard raised three children, David Howard, Sarah Elizabeth, and Steven Lee. Raising their family in Durham, she maintained a large vegetable garden used to feed her family along with making ample donations to surrounding neighbors. She was also a member of the Hillandale Garden Club.
Sarah was an active leader and participant in both the Cub Scouts and Girl Scouts for her children. She enjoyed baking cupcakes as Halloween treats. Some children loved them so much they would come back to ask for more as they were still warm from the oven. She also made a tasty banana pudding, and carrot cakes. Sarah enjoyed dancing throughout her lifetime, starting with roller-skate dancing with her sister, Betty as a child. Howard and her were members of a square-dancing team and would visit assisted living centers to perform.
Sarah gave freely of her time working with a disabled girl, Dorothy and making her part of the family. Sarah was an avid bowler herself and earned many trophies. Always caring with empathy with people in difficult circumstances, she followed through by supporting families to the end by being as hospice volunteer.
Following Howard’s retirement, they bought an RV and went camping monthly and joined the Good Sam RV Club. They enjoyed the opportunity to make new friendships and explore.
Sarah was preceded in death by her husband, Jesse Howard; her son, Steven Lee; her brother, Charlie Lee and her sister, Mary Virginia (Sallie).
She is survived by her sister, Bety Lord Francis, her son, David Howard with grandchildren Stacy, Andrew, Amanda, Bonny, Barak, Jesse, Matthew, Sara Grace, and Phebe; and her daughter, Sarah Elizabeth Jones with grandchildren, Victoria, and Catherine; with grandchildren Lee, and David Allen.
Sarah was a long-standing member of Guess Road Baptist Church in Durham. The family would like to extend a special thank you to both Reverend Tilley and the church members for all of their love and support over the years.
In lieu of flowers, you can honor Sarah by making a donation to the Alzheimer’s Association.
