Ronald "Ron" Gene Horton

Ronald “Ron” Gene Horton, 80, of Durham, NC passed away peacefully on May 3, 2026. Born on August 17,1945 in Rupert, ID he was the beloved son of the late Orval and Blanche (Pastian) Horton.

A proud veteran of the Marines (3rd Battalion, 5th Marines) and Navy (USS John F. Kennedy), Ron served his country honorably from 1963-1967 and 1969-1984, respectively. During his military service, he achieved the rank of E-7 and was awarded the Vietnam Campaign Medal, The National Defense Medal and the Navy Unit Commendation with bronze star, among many others.

Following his military career, he worked in electronics until his retirement in 2019. Outside of work he enjoyed wood working, travel and was an avid reader. Those who knew Ron will remember his quiet demeanor but bright smile, his love of a good comic strip or joke and his pride he had in his kids, grandsons or wife’s garden.

He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Reiko Horton; son Musashi Horton; daughter Fujika Kukurza (Mike); grandchildren Cyrus Kukurza and Ellis Kukurza; sisters Judy Doyle, Merry Kostroun, Sherry Horton; and brother Dan Horton. He was preceded in death by his sister Carol Ellston and brother Ed Horton.

In lieu of a funeral or military honors, Ron requested to have his ashes spread at home privately with family. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing and loving him.
