Pat Moulton, aka Miss Pat @ Pat’s Pawns, aka Demented @ The Red Hat Society escaped her “Old Age Hell” on April 18, 2024 at the ripe old age of 82. Pat didn’t believe in a higher power so to whomever gets her next….We are sorry. We did the best we could with what we had to work with. Our hope is that wherever she goes, her most beloved long lost best friend Audrey Beck is there also.
Born February 13, 1942, she was a surprise baby to her parents Hubert and Libby Carpenter, who already had 4 almost grown children. She was doted on as a baby and has been spoiled by her husband Ray ever since. She is survived by her lifetime love affectionately known as “Poor Ray”, their three children, Bobby (Teresa) Moulton, Melody Cooley, and Mia Di Meglio, a Bonus Heart son- Bobby (Robin) Barbour, 6 fabulous grandchildren: Nic, Brian (Liz), Matt (Kimberly), Adam (Stephanie), Alex (Amber) and Samantha (Tyler), and almost 6 deliciously beautiful great grandchildren.
Pat and Ray married in 1963 during a coffee break from work after dating for only 13 days. Pat was a collector of beautiful things and fabulous eclectic people. She was the most open (and judgmental) person you would ever meet. She did not care what you looked like or what circumstances you had been through. If your heart connected with hers, it was there for life. She loved her life, adored her family and friends and tolerated, albeit begrudgingly, everyone else. She loved to give an irritated eye roll. She proudly exhibited her “Foot in mouth” disease at every given opportunity because she was the master at saying inappropriate things. She loved a big party, a good bourbon, travel, thrift stores, cooking and plants. She was a master story teller and had an excellent memory, except when she didn’t. Then she would just insert herself as the villain or hero of the tale and make it up as she went along. She could recite limericks like a professional Irish barman, loved to dance the Shag, and was a contender in all competitive drinking games. Miss Pat was an excellent cook but wow was she messy! When she baked, it was like something blew up in the kitchen….flour, eggshells, and cocoa powder dripping from the cabinets and ceiling. She loved to share and baked for her friends and family often.
“Poor Ray” spent a good portion of their life cleaning up her messes, doing things for others that she had graciously volunteered him for and generally providing for her “Rigid requirements!” He loves her in a way that most of us will never experience in our lives and she knew it. She was a lot of work and she adored him deeply all the days of her life. Miss Pat lived a life of service. She volunteered for the PTA, the Red Cross and was a reserve officer for the Durham Police Department for many years. Later, as the owner of Pat’s Pawns, she took pride in running an honorable, small family business.
She did not want a funeral. She wanted a party! So wear your loudest, most outrageous clothes and be prepared to laugh. She wants no tears or sadness. No mournful music or horrible, sappy singing. And no insincere clergy who knew nothing of her life. If you have a good Pat story to tell, we would love to hear it!
