Norma Jean Cash Carter

Norma Jean Cash Carter of Durham, North Carolina entered into the Kingdom of God on July 15, 2026, at the age of 83.

Known as Jean to those closest to her, she was born on September 1st, 1942, in Durham, North Carolina to the late Felix John and Ethel Rigsbee Cash.

In addition to her parents, Jean is preceded in death by her husband Thomas Herny Carter, Jr.; brothers, Donnie, Larry, Bobby and Ricky Cash; sisters, Betty Lou Carpenter, Clara Pennington, Faye Benfield, Rose Marie Perry and Carolyn Ray.

Jean is survived by her three children, Tony Carter and wife Dianne of Creedmoor, Tim Carter and wife Ginger of Hillsborough, and Jeff Carter of Durham. She is also survived by two grandchildren, Ashley Pfeffer and Braxton Dean along with three great-grandchildren, Kennedy Jean (named after great-grandmother), Elsie and William Lee Dean, brother-in- law, Buster Ray and sister-in-law, Patsy Cash.

Though she held many jobs, she was best known for her years spent as a bus driver for students with special needs. Jean was known as generous friend, a caretaker of her family, a faithful member of Roberson Grove Baptist Church and a talented cook and baker. She never hesitated to cook someone a cake, loan a friend space in her home or give her grandchild a five-dollar bill. Jean’s presence will be missed greatly by friends and family alike.

Jean will be greeted in Heaven by her husband Thomas Carter, her parents Ethel and John Cash and her nine brothers and sisters.

A memorial will be held in Jean’s honor at Roberson Grove Baptist Church on Saturday, July 25th, 2026, at 2:00pm, with a visitation beginning at 1:00pm.
