Lila May Singer of Durham, NC passed away on September 17, 2025. She grew up in Jackson Heights, NY. She graduated from Hunter College High School, and received a BS in education from Queens College, and a MS in Student Personnel Services at Monmouth College in New Jersey. She taught in Glen Cove, NY; Long Branch; and for 25 years in Colts Neck, NJ. She lived in Tinton Falls, NJ from 1953, when she married Max Singer, until she relocated to Durham, NC in 2014.
She was past president of Colts Neck Township Education Association, the League of Women Voters of the Greater Red Bank Area, and the Inter League Organization of Monmouth County League of Women Voters where she was accorded the Marie Curtis Award.
At Monmouth Reform Temple in Tinton Falls, NJ, she chaired social action, membership, and in-reach committees, and served as a vice-president. She was on the board of the Center for Holocaust Studies at Brookdale Community College for 15 years. She served on the board of Interfaith Neighbors and Hadassah, and volunteered for Family Promise and Lunch Break in NJ. She was formerly on the Board of the Jewish Federation of Monmouth County and on their Soviet Jewry Task Force.
In North Carolina, Lila joined Judea Reform Congregation and served on their social action and membership committees. At the Forest at Duke, where she resided, she served on the New Member Orientation Committee and was a mentor to several new residents.
She was predeceased by her husband, Max Singer in 2009. Surviving are two sons, Joe and his wife Martha Minow, Bob and his wife Anne Rayman, a daughter, Gale and her husband Peter Adland; six grandchildren: Adam, Ari (Alicia), Rachel (David), Jesse (Chelsea), Naomi, and Mira, and eight great-grandchildren: Eliora, Mayim, Charlotte, Samantha, Margaret, Shoshana, Adina and Max.
There will be a private burial in New Jersey.
