Mr. Lewis DeWitt Bell, Sr., of Durham, passed away Sunday, December 11, 2022, at AuthoraCare in Burlington, NC. He was born November 3, 1938, in Atlanta, GA to the late Loren DeWitt and Ruth Cook Bell.

Lewis grew up in the St. Simons Island Boys Home in St. Simons GA. He had many wonderful stories about growing up there. He even met the Queen of the Netherlands! That was a great story! He grew up with strong values he carried through life.  He learned love and respect and expected it from his family. Lewis never met a stranger. He loved telling stories and jokes. He was always happy and full of laughter. He loved music and dancing. He danced at home with Wanda, the children and grandchildren. Lewis was also a veteran of the US Army. He told many stories about his experiences. He was the inspiration for Blane joining the Army.  He was very proud of Blane.  He was a wonderful husband, daddy, poppy, and friend to all who knew and loved him. He will truly be missed and never forgotten.

In addition to his parents, Lewis is preceded in death by his son Lewis DeWitt “Louie” Bell, Jr.; a brother, Leonard Bell; and a sister, Hazel Sasser.

Lewis is survived by his wife Wanda Wills Bell; daughters, Lisa Wilson (David) of GA, Jennifer Norton and Nichole Capel, both of Creedmoor, NC;  brother, C.L. Neville; sisters, Lynette Hohnerlein, Louise Sheaffer (J) and Carolyn Kessner; grandchildren, Blane Latta who is currently serving in the US Army in Fort Benning GA, Hannah Walker, Jaxon Cruz, Zachary Bell,  Nick Bell, Bradley Salerno, Casey Fowler (Jonathan), and Amber Bell; 3 great grandchildren.

A visitation will be held at 1 p.m. to 2 p.m., Sunday, December 18th, 2022 at First Love Community Church in Hillsborough, NC followed by a memorial service at 2 p.m. at the church.

Officiating will be Reverend Greg Long pastor of the church.
