John Andrew Wynne, 67, affectionately known as “Johnny,” went to be with the Lord on Friday, Jan. 26, 2024.
Johnny was preceded in death by his father and mother, William “Buck” Cannady Wynne Sr. and Hilda Chappell Wynne. He is survived by his brother, William “Bill” Cannady Wynne Jr.; sister, Carol Wynne Brown; four nieces; three great-nieces and a great-nephew; and two great-great nieces. He also left behind a multitude of extended family and friends who knew and loved him throughout his life.
Johnny spent the majority of his life in Durham, near many members of the sizable Wynne and Chappell families. He graduated from Southern Durham High School.
The majority of Johnny’s career was at Golden Belt as an ink mixer. After those operations moved out of Durham, he worked as a landscaper and boat mechanic, a perfect match for his love of boating and fishing.
Kerr Lake, where his parents had a home on the water near other family members, held a special place in his heart. He spent many hours water skiing and fishing there. In his later years, he lived in Oxford, N.C.
Johnny was an avid fisherman who was always able to bring home “the big ones.” He was a lifelong, devoted fan of the Dallas Cowboys and the Carolina Tar Heels. He had a soft spot in his heart for cats and had many as pets over the years. He was friendly, outgoing, caring, and always had a funny story at the ready.
Johnny will be missed by countless friends and family who loved him.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a contribution in Johnny’s memory to the Durham Rescue Mission, 507 E. Knox Street, Durham, N.C. 27701.
