John Anthony Scilipote, 83, of Durham, NC passed away on Friday, May 15, 2026. He was born in New Haven, CT on February 28, 1943 to the late Frank and Philomena Scilipote. John grew up in New Haven and lived in Northford CT, Bradenton FL, and most recently Durham NC.

John’s career began as a bank teller at First New Haven National Bank. His acumen for creative problem solving was recognized and he was tapped to work in their newly established computer department. This led to a long career in computer programming concluding with his time at Computer Science Corporation in the late 90's where his expertise in legacy computer systems was key.

John's talents were many but music was his life’s passion. He played trumpet and spent many decades moonlighting weekends with numerous wedding and club date bands. He counted Rafael Méndez, Doc Severinsen, and Maynard Ferguson amongst his musical idols.

John was a beloved father and husband. Although he often tried his best to polish a somewhat curmudgeony air, he was a genuinely kind and soft-hearted man who made friends everywhere he went. He was a devout Catholic and a member of Saints Peter & Paul the Apostles Catholic Church in Bradenton, FL for many years. He was also a fixture at the local cat rescue as he loved cats, and they loved him. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and the many lives he touched.

In addition to his parents, he is also preceded in death by his wife, Barbara Redmond; sister, Frances Forcinelli, and his two beloved cats, Ivory and Missy.

John is survived by his first wife, Nancy Scilipote along with his children, John Scilipote (Martha Williams), Lisa Scilipote, and Peter Scilipote (Ryowon Kim) and his grandchildren, Soreya Scilipote (Royer Andreé Garcia Rodas) and Annika Bennett.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made in John’s memory to the cats at Manatee County Animal Welfare Bishop Animal Shelter in Bradenton, FL.
