John Carmel “JC” Guliie, 85 of Mebane, North Carolina, passed away on Sunday, August 31st, 2025, in Durham, NC, at Hock Family Pavilion. He was born in Durham, North Carolina, on August 2nd, 1940, to the late Ernest and Halsie Gullie.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Gullie was preceded in death by his brothers; Burland and Jimmy Gullie, and his sister, Betty Jean Barnes.
Mr. Gullie, a devout Christian man, was a longtime member of First Free Will Baptist Church in Durham. He retired from C.C.F. after 26 years of dedicated service. After his retirement, he wanted to do something special. He was a compassionate employee for Hudson Funeral Home and Howerton Bryan Funeral Home for many years.
JC, in his younger years, was a great athlete. He played football at Oak Grove High School and was a semi-pro baseball player for the Durham Bees.
Mr. Gulie’s love for sports grew into being a faithful Duke Blue Devils fan. You could always find his residence by the Duke flag and memorabilia outside. JC enjoyed attending or watching any Duke game and frequently spoke about the days of Coach K and Coach Cut.
JC was a strong, silent, and faithful man of very few words. His actions were his speaking, always treating everyone with kindness and respect.
Mr. Gullie especially loved his family, always enjoying their presence. He will be deeply missed by everyone blessed to have known him.
JC is survived by his son, Joel Gullie, and wife Laura of Creston, NC; daughters, Lisa Denton of Hillsborough, NC, Janet Flack of Chapel Hill, NC, Jennifer Rigsbee of Mebane, NC, and Sandy Barbee of Wake Forest, NC; brother George Gullie; seven grandchildren; Victoria Rigsbee, J.J. Rigsbee, Shane Gullie, Justin Stewart, Brandon Stewart, Dustin Long, and Judson Avery; and one great grandchild; Bristol Stewart.
A private graveside service will be held at 2:00 P.M. on Friday, September 5th, 2025, at Oak Grove Memorial Gardens, 3712 Cheek Rd., Durham, NC. Don Paschall will officiate.
The family will receive friends prior to the graveside service from 12:00 P.M. to 1:30 P.M. at Hudson Funeral Home.
Serving as Pallbearers will be Shane Gullie, J.J. Rigsbee, Brandon Stewart, Justin Stewart, Judson Avery, Jacob Borden, Larry Holleman, Mike Young, Doug Hall, and Barry Lassiter.
In lieu of flowers, donations in JC’s memory can be made to Duke Hock Family Pavilion, 4023 N. Roxboro St., Durham, NC 27704.
