John Alvin Parnell

DURHAM Mr. John Alvin Parnell, 73, of Durham, died on Monday, January 6, 2014.
Mr. Parnell was born in Roanoke Rapids to the late John Millard Parnell and Dorothy Whitman Parnell. He retired from American Airlines as a mechanic. He was a member of the East Durham Church of God where he was an Usher, Superintendent and Teacher of Sunday School and Children’s Church. He was an avid golfer and a member of the Over the Hill Gang at Hillandale Golf Course. He loved fishing with his brother on the Outer Banks and entertaining his loving children and grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife, Rosa Parnell; one son, Derrick Parnell and wife, Jenny of Durham; one daughter, Kristin Matthews and husband, Chris of Durham; sister, Teresa Browning of Durham; seven grandchildren, Devin Parnell, Blayk Parnell, Chelsea Parnell, Danielle Matthews, C. J. Matthews, Samantha Matthews, Carter Matthews and former wife, Barbara Parnell
The family will receive friends on Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Hudson Funeral Home. Flowers are acceptable.
