Joan Matthews Wheeler

Joan Lee Matthews Wheeler, 85, went to her heavenly home to be with her Lord and Savior at 5:39 PM on March 20, 2024, after an eight year long battle with Alzheimer’s disease. 

Mrs. Wheeler was born on April 25, 1938, to the late Eva Beasley and Clarence Matthews in Durham County, North Carolina. She was preceded in death by her brothers, Carl and Maxi Matthews. She is survived by her husband of 67 years, Jack Wheeler; son, Frank Wheeler (Paige) of Fletcher, NC; daughter, Donna W. Gregorski (Tom) of Kenly, NC.; grandchildren, Laura G. Smith (Nate), Morgan Wheeler, Andy Johnson, and Chris Johnson.

Mrs. Wheeler graduated from Durham High School in 1956. Her past employers included Wright’s Machinery, Drs. Crane and Smith Dermatology, Burroughs Wellcome (25 years), and the Environmental Protection Agency. She also sold Tupperware and Home Interiors Products.

Mrs. Wheeler was very active in the churches she attended - Gospel Center, Grove Park Chapel, and lastly, Northgate Chapel. She taught Sunday school, sang in the choir, and enjoyed cooking for all the church fellowships.

Mrs. Wheeler was an avid reader of Christian fiction books and started a lending library to her friends. She loved shopping and especially enjoyed giving to others. She was a devoted wife and mother, always putting others before herself. She will be sorely missed by her family and friends.

Her celebration of life will be held on Monday, March 25, at 2:00 PM at the Chapel of Hope Mausoleum at Woodlawn Memorial Park, 2107 Liberty Street, Durham, with Pastor Johnny Gordon officiating. Burial will follow in Woodlawn Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Four Seasons Hospice Foundation, 211 N. Main Street, Hendersonville, NC 28792, where her precious daughter-in-law is employed.
