DURHAM- Mr. Jerry Bowling Cates, 93, passed away Saturday, November 7, 2020 at Treyburn Rehabilitation Center.
Mr. Cates was born April 13, 1927 to the late Lonnie and Jewel Cates in Durham, NC. He was a machinist at Liggett & Myers Tobacco Company for over 30 years where he retired. Mr. Cates was a member for over 35 years at Calvary Baptist Church. He was an avid camper and loved to travel. Mr. Cates was a member of the Sam’s Camping Club. He was an avid fan of the Duke Blue Devils. Mr. Cates loved his old cars and had great appreciation for Plymouth and Chryslers that he enjoyed working on. He enjoyed NASCAR, bowling and going to Orange County Speedway. Mr. Cates proudly served his country in the United States Navy. He will be remembered as a loving and devoted husband, father and grandfather.
Mr. Cates is preceded in death by his wife, Essie Cates; mother of his children, Frances; parents, Lonnie and Jewel Cates; brothers, Troy, Clinton and Garland Cates; sisters, Elpha and Edith.
Mr. Cates is survived by his daughters, Teresa Johnson (Barry), Vicki Blackwell (Alvin); brother, Bobby Cates; grandchildren, Jake Johnson and Diane Blackwell.
Hudson Funeral Home will be observing social distancing for visitation as well as the funeral service, and asks everyone in attendance to wear a mask when entering the building.
Visitation will be on Tuesday, November 10, 2020 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Hudson Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, November 11, 2020 at Hudson Funeral Home Chapel. Officiating will be Reverend Dr. Robby Phillips. Pallbearers will be Barry Johnson, Jake Johnson, Alvin Blackwell, Mike Cates, Steve Cates, Kenny Glenn and Rodney Glenn.
