Janet Hodges Sparrow: February 20, 1943 - March 2, 2026
Janet Hodges Sparrow passed away on March 2, 2026, in Collierville, Tennessee at the age of 83. She was born in Durham, North Carolina to Aubrey Hodges and Estelle Walker Hodges. She graduated from Durham High School in 1961 and married her high school sweetheart, Larry Sparrow on August 31, 1962. Together they built a beautiful life and had two wonderful sons, Larry Jr. and Michael.
She is survived by her husband Larry; two sons Larry Jr. (wife Jennifer) and Michael (wife Julie); four granddaughters Taylor McKnatt (husband Hunter), Morgan, Aubrie and Lauren. She is also survived by her younger brother Lamond Hodges (wife Jeannette), as well as many family members who loved her.
She followed her husband throughout his corporate career, living in several states across the country. Of all the places they lived, Texas was her favorite. Raising her two sons was her greatest joy. She also maintained an active lifestyle and enjoyed walking, particularly with the Sierra Club walking groups.
She loved animals, especially dogs, llamas and horses and she supported many no-kill dog shelters. While living in Chapel Hill, she was an avid supporter of the University of North Carolina Women’s Basketball Team and always enjoyed going to the games.
Janet and Larry moved to Collierville, Tennessee to be near their son and granddaughters. They lived at The Farms at Bailey Station, a lovely lifecare community in Collierville. As her Alzheimer’s progressed, she moved into the memory care facility on site, where the staff provided attentive and loving care.
Her funeral service will be held at Hudson Funeral Home in Durham, North Carolina, on Wednesday, March 11, 2026 at 2 pm. The family will receive visitors there at 1 pm. The burial will follow at Oak Grove Memorial Gardens. After the services, there will be a buffet reception at the Redwood Ruritan Club at 4803 Cheek Road, Durham, NC.
