James R. Thrash, SMSGT, USAF (Retired)

James R. Thrash, SMSGT, USAF (Retired), 85, of Durham, North Carolina passed away on Friday, October 17, 2025. He was born on May 21, 1940, in Shreveport, Louisiana to the late William and Gladys Thrash.

In addition to his parents, he is also preceded in death by his daughters, Sandra Cole, Melody Marcus and Ann Marie Thrash; brothers, Jerry Thrash and Bill Thrash; sisters, Mardrie Jackson, Betty Woods and Dorothy “Totsy” Wroten.

Mr. Thrash proudly served his country in the United States Air Force for 26 years until he retired as a Senior Master Sergeant. His service in the Air Force gave him many opportunities over the years that he greatly appreciated. James’s second career began with DuPont where he worked for over 20 years until he retired as an Electronics Technician.

James was truly an intelligent man who loved to stay busy and work with his hands. He was a licensed TV and Radio Repairman, a Locksmith and worked on small engines. Mr. Thrash could fix just about anything and could build his own personal computer.

Mr. Thrash enjoyed golfing, fishing and going camping in the RV with Lani. Most of all he enjoyed time with his family and friends. He will be remembered as a good man who was quiet, intelligent and always willing to help anyone.

Mr. Thrash is survived by his loving wife of 45 years, Lani Thrash; son, Richard Thrash, Jr. (Lisa); daughter, Linda Copeland (Michael); son; Joel Morales; son, John Thrash (Jennifer Buzby); 16 grandchildren; 29 great grandchildren; 2 great great grandchildren and numerous other loving family members and friends.

Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Monday, October 20, 2025 at Hudson Funeral Home, 211 S. Miami Blvd., Durham, NC 27703. Rev. Hugh O'Shields will officiate.

The family will receive friends prior to the service starting at 10:00 A.M.

The Committal Service will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Wednesday, October 22, 2025 at Oak Grove Memorial Gardens, 3712 Cheek Rd., Durham, NC 27703 where Military Honors will be rendered by the United States Air Force Honor Guard.
