Frank Melvin Holder

Sep 5, 1935 — Sep 22, 2026

Durham

Frank M. Holder, 91, loving father, father in law, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend peacefully went home to be with the Lord surrounded by his family on Tuesday September 22, 2026, at Duke Hock Family Pavilion. Known affectionately as Papa, he leaves behind a legacy of love, compassion for both people and animals, and an immense work ethic. Frank was a loyal friend and would give the shirt off his back to those in need.

Frank, one of thirteen children, was born in Durham to the late John Wesley Holder and Lillie Lee Fletcher Holder. In addition to his parents, Papa is preceded in death by his wife, Nannie Clifton Holder, brothers, Broncho, Arthur, Robert, Rex, John Jr, Charles, and sisters, Hallie Appelt, Virgia Johnson, Nora Tuck, and Christine Eakes.

Frank is survived by sons, Ricky Holder (Teresa) and Matt Holder. Along with his sons, Papa is survived by granddaughters, Jessica Hale (Steven), Brandie Jeffries (Jeremy), great grandson, Gage Jeffries, brother, Don Holder (Patricia), sister, Maxine Thomas and his dog, Opie. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

Frank lived the majority of his life in Durham, until he, along with his sons moved to Stem in 2023. Papa was the happiest when surrounded by his family or working the dirt. For many years, he worked second shift at Golden Belt and came home to work in either a tobacco field or a vegetable garden. He was a farmer at heart. Frank retired after working 39 years with American Brands (Golden Belt). Never one to sit idle, he then worked at the NC State Farmers Market for 25+ years, retiring a second time at the age of 85. He was hardworking, determined, dependable, and a man of his word. When he said he was going to do something; you could count on him to do it.

Frank was an avid fisherman who loved both the thrill of the catch and the joy of eating the fish he brought home. He made many wonderful memories on fishing trips with family and friends, and those memories were often shared and cherished. An Alaskan fishing trip was on Papa’s bucket list. After retiring from the Golden Belt, he made that dream a reality, traveling to Alaska and returning home with king salmon and halibut. He spoke fondly of the adventure and treasured the memories he made along the way.

Frank had a strong faith in the Lord and strived to live his life in accordance with God’s word. The family takes great comfort in knowing that he has been received in the loving arms of his Savior.

The family extends their deepest gratitude for the compassionate care provided to him at Duke Hock Family Pavilion.
