Estelle Ann Clark, 75, of Durham, NC passed away peacefully on Tuesday, May 13, 2025, after a courageous battle with Alzheimer’s disease. Born on October 3, 1949, in Miami, Florida, Estelle was the daughter of the late Sidney Bernard and Rose Leinwol Horowitz.
In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her beloved siblings Howard Horowitz, Allan Horowitz, and Marsha Rosenberg. She is survived by her devoted son, Marcus J. Hesse of Chapel Hill, NC, and her cherished sister, Janice Bell-Lewis of Elba, Alabama, and dedicated former husband Paul Hesse of Oxford, NC.
Estelle led a vibrant and impactful life, dedicating her career to public education as a deeply respected and much-loved teacher in Durham, North Carolina, and Woody Gap, Georgia. Her compassion, creativity, and commitment to her students left an enduring legacy throughout the communities of Durham.
A woman of deep faith and strong values, Estelle was a cherished member of Judea Reform Congregation in Durham. She was known for her integrity, her belief in excellence, and her devotion to family—later finding meaningful connection through exploring her roots in genealogy.
Estelle will be remembered for her tenacity, sharp intellect, and uncompromising standards, as well as her unwavering commitment to justice, education, and the deep love she held for her family—especially her son, Marcus.
A memorial service will be held on Monday, May 19, 2025, at 12:00 p.m. at Judea Reform Congregation, 1933 W Cornwallis Rd, Durham, NC.
Interment will follow at 2:00 p.m. at Maplewood Cemetery.
Rabbi Matt Soffer will officiate.
