Edna W. Davis

An angel on Earth for 95 years, has now made her way to eternity, by gaining her Heavenly wings, and has left a huge hole in our hearts and family, yet a huge but lasting impression to everyone who knew her.

Edna Earle Wheeler Davis passed away on July 21, 2026, and is now with her Lord & Savior, and her beloved husband of 72 years, Glenn Guido Davis.

Edna was the only girl out of six children, born to Geter Pritchard Wheeler and Thelma Ruby Andrews Wheeler on February 2, 1931. Edna was blessed with five brothers, whom she LOVED with all her heart. That was the beauty of Edna, she LOVED! She LOVED her family with everything in her. She made it a point to show that LOVE through so many of her actions.

As a child, Edna helped her Mother Thelma with many of the chores expected of the females within that era. With a home full of boys, she and her mother were always busy making sure everyone’s needs were met. Times were hard on her family, but they made it the best they could with what little they had. Through all their family struggles, Edna didn’t fail in letting everyone know that LOVE is what made them get through it all.

As a teenage girl, she met the LOVE of her life while working in a downtown Durham soda shop. Edna had a weakness for men in uniform, and the Navy sailor that caught her eye and especially her heart was none other than Glenn Guido Davis. When the two met, they shared a milkshake that only cost them one nickel. It was LOVE no doubt, a LOVE that lasted 72 years of marriage until Glenn’s calling to his Heavenly home on July 20, 2020.

Edna married Glenn on November 7, 1947, and they had two children. A son, Daniel Allen Davis, and a daughter, Glenda Jo Davis (Holleman). Edna was a devoted wife and mother, as she raised their two children while Glenn was a traveling insurance salesman. Early within their marriage and during the 1950s, they moved from Durham to Charlotte, NC and lived there from 1950 to1953. Edna always stated that she understood the move to Charlotte because of Glenn’s position with BSBCNC, but because of the long-distance move, she was extremely homesick and wanted to move back to be closer to family. She and the family did move back, but instead of moving back to Durham, they resided close by in Henderson, NC. She was happier to be closer to home, but it still wasn’t Durham, and she longed to be back to her roots. After a few years in Henderson, her dreams of moving back to Durham became a reality and she never moved away from Durham again, making the Bull City her permanent home. Her and Glenn became avid Duke Blue Devil fans and rarely missed watching a basketball game together. She was a great armchair coach!

During the 1960s, she started a position at the customer service desk at King’s Department store, formally located in Wellons Village. She adored meeting people and loved every aspect of her position. Some of her happiest times was working there, and she made it a point to let the family know just how special each of her many friendships meant to her. Customers and friends would want to visit and shop at King’s because they had the pleasure to run into her while visiting. Edna was very special to many people.

Edna was employed with King’s Department store from 1963 to 1980. While working a job she loved, she was allowed to bring her first grandchild Angie to babysit at the service desk after picking her up from school. Because of her love for children, Edna decided that in 1980, when the news of her second grandchild was on the way, she would retire. She determined she would babysit Jennifer, then the third grandbaby Chris, and finally the fourth, Chase. She enjoyed every minute of having her grandkids grow up together, along with the other children of friends that she welcomed into her home to babysit throughout the years.

Edna’s home was always filled with an abundance amount of LOVE. She never let anyone go hungry, as she always had steaming hot food to offer. She was always so adamant that no one was to leave her home without a full belly and lots of LOVE. The children that Edna babysat will always be able to look back and know that they were very much LOVED and very well taken care of. She taught them so many lessons in life, from schoolwork, respect, manners, daily chores, gardening, to know and LOVE God, and she instilled in each of them to be good people.

Edna LOVED the Lord. She made it a point to teach her family to know God, and to put God into everything we do. Every Sunday, you could find Edna on Driver Street, attending Carr United Methodist Church, as she was secretary/treasurer for many years of the Nell Morris Bible Class. Her membership at Carr UMC was a special and cherished time. When changes were made within her former church, she then moved her place of worship to Fletcher’s Chapel United Methodist Church, as she and Glenn became members later in life. She was a member of Ruth Women’s Circle and she deeply cherished the friendships that she made during her time at Fletcher’s.

Edna’s caring and devotion in helping others carried on throughout her life, in every age, and within everything she did. Being that her husband Glenn was a Master Freemason, she was able to take her charitable work even further when she became a member of The Order of the Eastern Star, belonging first to Donnie Rich Chapter then Bahama Chapter #203. She felt even more purpose when she was able to join, and within the organization, she showed so many others the gift of charity, kindness, truth, and moral values. On June 14, 2026, Edna was presented with her Order of the Eastern Star 50 year membership pin. She also enjoyed her service through the Order of the Amaranth. Edna was surely one of a kind and the truth of that statement is forever with all who knew her.

During the latter part of Edna’s life, with aging, battling mobility issues, and after losing her husband, Edna tried her best to keep pushing forward, no matter the hurt and loss. Her life changed dramatically when Glenn went home to Heaven, but she did her best and succeeded in living life ot the fullest, no matter the obstacles. Her loving and caring ways will never be forgotten. She lived a long and full life.

Edna is survived by son Daniel Allen Davis (Donna) of Rougemont, NC, her daughter Glenda Davis Holleman of Durham, NC, granddaughter Angela Diane Whitley of Kernersville, NC, granddaughter Jennifer Lynn Holleman Faircloth (Brad), of Alamance, NC, Christopher Glenn Davis (Gailee) of Columbus, NC, and William “Chase” Davis of Rougemont, NC. She is survived by four great-grandchildren Miranda Brooks (Josh) of Greensboro, NC, Aram Davis, Asher Davis, and Dinah Davis, of Columbus, NC. She is also survived by one great-great grandchild, Warren Brooks, of Greensboro, NC.

Of Edna’s surviving brothers, they include Jack Wheeler of Durham, NC, and Louis Wheeler (Gail) of Rougemont, NC.

She is also survived by two very special family members, Angela Kay Luck of Kernersville, NC and Brigitte Reitmeyer, also of Kernersville, NC.

Edna was predeceased by her parents, Geter Pritchard Wheeler, and Thelma Ruby Andrews Wheeler. Also, her husband Glenn Guido Davis, brothers Leroy Wheeler, Jeter Wheeler, and Eugene Wheeler. Father-in-Law Henry Albert Davis, Mother-in-Law Eva Bowen Davis, and Brother-in-Law Garland Davis, and Sister-in-Law Paulene Whitney.

A very special thank you goes out to her caregivers Shallan Alexander and Cherie Barnett. The family is forever grateful for their kindness and care given to Edna.

Please join us to celebrate this special lady’s life and legacy on Saturday, July 25 at 10:00 a.m. at Fletcher’s United Methodist Church.

Funeral service to be held at 11:00 a.m. followed by a graveside service in the Fletcher’s Chapel graveyard.
