Clarence “Smokey” Carroll

July 22, 1953 — November 7, 2020

DURHAM- Mr. Clarence “Smokey” Carroll, 67, passed away, Saturday, November 7, 2020 at Durham Ridge Assisted Living.

Mr. Carroll was born July 22, 1953 to the late Clarence and Mattie Carroll at Watts Hospital in Durham, NC. Smokey worked as a Plumber for his brother, Albert “Coota” Carroll until his death in December of 1996. He then worked for Durham plumbing until 2012. He also had a passion for NASCAR which may have inspired his nephew to become a Race Car Driver. In his spare time, he loved to go fishing at the Outer Banks with his family. Smokey dearly loved his family and friends. He will be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend. Smokey always had a big smile on his face and great spirit and that will always be remembered but deeply missed.

Smokey is preceded in death by his father, Clarence Lee Carroll; step-father, Robert “Bob” Williams; mother, Mattie Stephens Carroll Williams; wife of 38 years, Rhonda Hope Cheek; brother, Albert “Coota” Carroll; sister, Patricia O’Neal.

Smokey is survived by his sisters, Donna Gullie and Tanya Johnson (David); son, Shane Cheek; grandson, Holden Cheek; 6 nephews, 4 nieces; special friend, Buck Clayton; and other loving family members and friends.

Pallbearers will be Robbie Gullie, Jason Gullie, Camden Gullie, Shane Cheek, Holden Cheek and Terry Holbrook.

Hudson Funeral Home will be observing social distancing for visitation as well as the funeral service, and asks everyone in attendance to wear a mask when entering the building.

A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, November 12, 2020 at Hudson Funeral Home Chapel. Visitation will be held an hour prior to the service from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. Officiating will be Reverend Tim McCreight. Pallbearers will be Robbie Gullie, Jason Gullie, Camden Gullie, Shane Cheek, Holden Cheek, and Terry Holbrook.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Shady Grove Baptist Church at 3805 Carpenter Pond Rd, Durham, NC 27703.
