Charles Owen Hill, 78, of Durham, North Carolina peacefully passed away at Duke University Hospital surrounded by his loving family. He was born on April 11, 1945, in Durham, NC to the late Charles Owen and Mary Hill. At a very young age, Charles’ father passed away leaving his grandparents, Robert and Lottie Hill, to be heavily involved in his rearing.
In addition to his parents and grandparents, Charles was preceded in death by his loving wife, Betty, of 59 years and his Great Grandson, Owen Lee Hill. He is survived by his children; Michael Hill (Laura), Kimberly Carpenter (Neal), and Christopher Hill; grandchildren Amanda Zweitzig (Quinn), Justin Hill (Kassandra), Collin Carpenter, and Chloe Carpenter; great grandchildren Brian Sego, Skyler Zweitzig, Trinity Zweitzig, Orion Hill and Jaxon Zweitzig; and siblings Carol Ann Murray, Harold Hill, Treva Lemon (Wade), Joy Allen, Herman Mauldin (Sharon), and Doug Mauldin.
Mr. Hill attended Oak Grove School. He worked as an Electrician throughout his career, and at age 70 he ultimately retired from The Liggett Group as a Senior Electrician. After retirement, he spent most of his time caring for his dearly beloved wife.
Charles was a member at Durham Memorial Baptist Church where he enjoyed singing in the choir. He also took joy in attending the men’s Sunday School class along with many of his lifetime friends, as well as participating in the church softball league. Throughout Charles’s younger years, he relished playing baseball for the Durham Bees. He also took great pleasure in playing golf and participating in the Herald Sun Golf Tournament.
Charles was a devoted husband and father, and a wonderful provider. His work ethic knew no bounds, and he sought perfection in any task he undertook from yard work to home renovations. Charles had one of the most vibrant personalities you could hope to encounter. His smile and contagious laughter would brighten any room, and his jokes and antics brought joy to everyone around him. He will truly be missed.
