Betty Marie Strayhorn Moore, 69, of Durham passed away peacefully on May 21, 2025, at Hock Family Pavilion in Durham. Mrs. Moore was born on July 13, 1955, in Mebane, NC. She is predeceased by her father, Roy “Bruce” Strayhorn, mother Thelma Williams Strayhorn and nephew Craig Douglas Harding.
Betty is survived by her siblings, Larry W. Strayhorn of Durham, Jane S. Hassebrock and husband Bob of Raleigh, Roy Bruce Strayhorn, Jr. and wife Sherry of Durham, Tim L. Strayhorn and wife Carol of Hillsborough; nieces and nephews, Amanda Hassebrock, Tyler Strayhorn (Hannah), Shannon Strayhorn, Christina Bailey (Jeremy), and Nathan Strayhorn.
Betty began her career at Watts Hospital, which later became Durham Regional Hospital. She went on to serve in several vital public safety roles, including Duke Public Safety for three years, the City of Durham’s 911 Communications Center for ten years, and the Durham Crime Lab for three years. She concluded her distinguished career with Durham County Emergency Management, focusing on fire investigations, for nineteen years.
A lifelong animal lover, Betty had a special passion for animal rescue and devoted much of her time and energy to the care of animals in need.
In retirement, she found joy in organic gardening, cooking, and spending time with her family and beloved animals — especially her cherished horse, Mike.
A private interment will be held for the family at a later date.
