DISCLOSURES AND PROCEDURES FOR PRE-FUNDING
YOUR ARRANGEMENTS WITH HUDSON FUNERAL HOME

The disclosures and procedures for prefunding your arrangements have been written to assist you in understanding the process involved when you decide to prefund your prearrangements with Hudson Funeral Home. These procedures will familiarize you with North Carolina law as it pertains to prefunding for prearrangements. North Carolina is one of only 16 highly regulated states in America regarding prefunding. What occurs in Texas, California, Florida or any other unregulated states, is not pertinent to rules and regulations governing prearrangements in North Carolina.

The North Carolina Board of Mortuary Science requires that a NC licensed funeral director discuss and complete your prearrangements. In North Carolina, a licensed funeral director is one who:

  • has completed formal education in funeral services at an accredited mortuary school.
  • has served an apprenticeship under the supervision of a NC licensed funeral director for at least one year and has completed the tasks and criteria set forth by the NCBMS.
  • has passed the NC Funeral Director’s Board Exam and/or the National Board for Funeral Services.
  • has completed at least 5 hours of continuing education classes per year which has been duly recorded with the NCBMS.
  • pays a yearly funeral director licensing fee and/or a pre-need licensing fee.

To complete your arrangements, our licensed staff will suggest a visit either in your home or a visit to the funeral home to discuss your decisions. This arrangement conference establishes a written record of your vital statistics, and documents your selections. NCBMS regulates how funeral directors, embalmers and funeral establishments conduct business. Cemeteries are a separate entity, and do not fall under the NCBMS regulatory statutes.

Funds that are placed in advance are placed in trust with Homesteaders Life Company (est. 1906) until the time of need. Homesteaders Life Company will create a certificate for you and you will receive this certificate within (10-14) days from the time you enroll. Your check can be made payable to either Homesteaders Life Company, or to Hudson Funeral Home.

When you prefund your arrangement, the funeral director will request a separate check in the amount of $18.00, made payable to the NCBMS (North Carolina Board of Mortuary Science) This is an administrative recording fee, which in part is placed in the recovery fund used to secure your funds. Within (30) days, the recording of the contract is acknowledged in writing to you as purchaser by the Board.

When all paperwork is completed and processed, copies of your arrangements will be held by Hudson Funeral Home, Homesteaders Life Company, and the North Carolina Board of Mortuary Science. You will receive a copy of all paperwork signed in the funeral home the day you complete the arrangements. You will subsequently receive confirmation from the Homesteaders Life Company and the NCBMS.
