Rabbi Deborah Katz Slavitt

MYRTLE BEACH: Rabbi Deborah Katz Slavitt, of Myrtle Beach, passed away peacefully at her home surrounded by her loved ones on Sunday, January 31, 2016.
She was born in South Hadley, Mass. to the late Isaac Katz and Aileen Cramer Katz. She was married to her childhood sweetheart for 36 years. She attended Phillips Exeter Academy, graduated with honors from Bryn Mawr College and received her master’s degree in Jewish studies from Hebrew College. She attended rabbinical school at the Academy of Jewish Religion and was ordained as a rabbi in 2002. She led the congregation at Beth-Elohim in Georgetown, SC and she taught world religions at Coastal Carolina University. She was a devoted wife, loving mother and wise teacher who will be dearly missed.
She is survived by her husband, Evan Meyer Slavitt; her son, Isaac Meyer Slavitt and his wife, Amanda Hadad; her daughters; Hannah Chloe Slavitt, and Tamar Adele Slavitt; and her brothers, Michael Katz, James Katz, Andrew Katz, David Katz and John Katz.
Funeral services will be held at Hudson Funeral Chapel on Wednesday February 3, 2016 at 11 a.m. with burial to follow at the Durham Hebrew Cemetery. Donations in her honor can be made to No Kid Hungry Organization, 1030 15th Street, NW, Suite 1100 W, Washington DC, 20005 and the Angels Among Us Foundation, at Tisch Brain Tumor Center-Angels, DUMC Box 3624, Durham, NC 27710 for Brain Tumor Research.
