Margaret Rebecca Boone Smith

May 6, 1927 — July 23, 2014

DURHAM-  Margaret Rebecca Boone Smith, age 87, of Max Meadows, VA went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, July 23, 2014 after an extended illness with breast cancer. She was born May 6, 1927 in Knoxville, TN to the late Clarence and Maggie Robertson Boone. Margaret was a long time native of Durham, NC where she attended Durham High School and was employed as a telephone operator with Verizon/GTE South for 36 years until her retirement. She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Durham where she taught Sunday School and gladly carried many ladies to their obligations and appointments. Throughout her life, Margaret enjoyed crocheting, sewing, and cooking for others. She loved watching the food network channel. She maintained her sense of humor and lived by the Optimist Creed even in her final days. Margaret will surely be missed by all who knew and loved her. Margaret was preceded in death by her husband, John R. Smith, Sr., brothers, Clarence, Robert, and J.W. and a sister Helen Holder.

She is survived by her only son John R. Smith, Jr. and daughter-in-law Cathy Gravley Smith, two cherished grandchildren, Lyndsay and Jared of Max Meadows, VA, a wonderful brother John Boone of Canton, NC. Several treasured nieces and nephews also survive.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. at Hudson Funeral Chapel. Reverend Al Sholar will officiate. Burial will be in Oak Grove Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends on Saturday from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. one hour prior to the service at Hudson Funeral Home. The family would like to thank the entire staff of Hospice of Southwest Virginia, WCCH and Carrington Place Pace Unit of Wytheville for all the care and affection shown to Margaret during her illness. A special thank you to Nancy Rose, caregiver, and loving friend. Thank you for all of your kindness and caring ways. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Margaret’s memory to Hospice of Southwest Virginia, 600 West Ridge Road, Wytheville, VA 24382.
